Risky Business Essay

Teen trends online such as video games or social media can cause the actions of teens to be reckless and their decisions making to be what everyone else does. Teens will also want to attract themselves to others.

In the online world, it is a great place to express the vision of them without having to do it in person. Teens can follow up on what they see all over the Internet and can join the trend anytime they want. On social networking such as vine, YouTube, or instagram, you can make new friends and even set a new idea of how someone thinks of you. About 93% of teens according to PewResearchCenter go online everyday. These people are open to the new mindset of the generation and will be likely to dress, and try new things what everyone else are doing. When there are good things happening there are cons to these situations. It may risk your life, your attitude, and even the relationships you have with people.

Online shopping has brought 35.6 million people to buying their clothes and merchandises online. About 50% of people said that social media influenced them to buy online. A lot of these teens aren’t loyal to the brands that they buy and buy a different variety of clothing. Many of them wants to dress like the people that are known and dress like what everyone that you see in the malls or when you go out with friends. Top sites like amazon or Nike targets these teens and promote it so everyone would crave for it.  Online shopping isn’t right for people because anyone can buy anything to have the “in-thing”. They shouldn’t change what they wear because of looking different then anyone else. Online shopping also has its good side because many people can buy things for cheap when buying the same item in their community is twice as much. It helps family have a higher standard of living.

A huge trend that is growing in the world is video games. About 67% of U.S house holds play video games. When people play it allows them to express and release their feelings in the virtual world. Teens playing violent games such as Call of duty increase their aggressive thoughts and their feeling of empathy towards other. Video games shouldn’t be played a lot which makes the teen get addicted to it and wont be useful of what they could be doing.

Teen Trends online effects what the teens do. When one trend dies, a new one will always pop up. When people try to stay original, they aren’t because that person is copying someone that they think is cool. They dress and do the things that other teens whose popular are doing.

Essay Prompt for WSU

To be a leader and group contributor, I could help anyone that would need help or that would benefit the community. Being able to help someone as simple as talking or from taking action to do something, it means a lot to a person. As a young adult, taking part in a summer fun program to become a junior leader was a way I could give back when the same program in my neighborhood gave me so much and different kind of opportunities. Having to go to Molokai, a trip that I wouldn’t have to pay, I simply gave back by crating a video for the people who taught me things that other people wouldn’t have a chance.
Creativity everywhere is open to everyone in a different view. People might think as me a weird person, but I think to be as a many minded person. Living in Hawaii is like being in paradise to those from the mainland. Nature is set everywhere for us to see. The skies are clear and the weather is the same every time. My mind is set on where endless ideas of what can be pictured through a video, camera, or actions that I take.
A challenge that sticks out to the rest of my other challenges is fixing the relationships I had messed up with the mistake I did in middle school. Not going school for one day without a reason was something I wouldn’t forget.  Teachers, parents, school staff, and friends had their ideas about me change to a negative state. I went through consequences to repay for what I have did. The teachers and office staff people had a personal talk with me. What they have said had brought me to heart to change to make better decisions. With my parents it felt awkward because they knew that I was a better person than that. In the end, I found that my friends were worried, and we made promises it would never happen again.
I have volunteered my time to pay back what my community has done. After being on the track team for 3 years at my middle school, It was a friendly environment to be around with. I spend my after school hours helping out my former team to prepare for their environment. Even at a younger age I spent my time around my community. I became a junior leader and used my summer to help kids out where I was once in their position. During high school, I do more work than the usual to volunteer for the teachers, in plays, videos, or even clean ups.
In Hawaii, I really haven’t been through discrimination. Here, many people are mixed and are from all over different places, such as japan, china, and other different states. Even though I don’t have experience with discrimination, I am prepared. I would try not to let it get to me and have it ruin my experience if I get the chance to be at this wonderful university. I hear that at Washington St. people don’t really bully or discriminate and community is friendly.
Surviving in the mainland without my family is something always on my mind. I would want to get through my college years hear smoothly and feel comfortable like how I am at home. I plan to make friends and open myself to the community, by doing this; I would get the help I need. Another goal I have set for my self is to lead find what I would like to do in the future, ace all the work and get into the field that I have desired for. The mainland especially WSU, offers so many opportunities, it wouldn’t be a smart decision to miss this chance.

WSU has six writing requirements, presented as a single question. In College Essay Organizer, we break them up into single requirements, since their word counts are individually labeled:

  • Knowledge or creativity in a field: Describe any of your special interests and how you have developed knowledge in these areas. Give examples of your creativity: the ability to see alternatives; take diverse perspectives; come up with many, varied, or original ideas; or willingness to try new things.
  • Dealing with adversity: Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to address this challenge. Include whether you turned to anyone in facing that challenge, the role that person played, and what you learned about yourself.
  • Community service: Explain what you have done to make your community a better place to live. Give examples of specific projects in which you have been involved over time.

  • Goals/task commitment: Articulate the goals you have established for yourself and your efforts to accomplish them. Give at least one specific example that demonstrates your work ethic/diligence.
Each of these requirements has a length of about a hundred words, which makes for a significant amount of writing, and perhaps more importantly, topic selection. A. Personal Statement (Required)

The Personal Statement is our best means of getting to know you and your best means of creating a context for your academic performance. When you write your personal statement, tell us about those aspects of your life that are not apparent from your academic record. Tell us about the experiences that don’t show up on your transcript:
  • a character-defining moment,
  • the cultural awareness you’ve developed,
  • a challenge faced,
  • a personal hardship or barrier overcome.

Directions

Choose either A or B. Please do not exceed 650 words.
A. Discuss how your family’s experience or cultural history enriched you or presented you with opportunities or challenges in pursuing your educational goals.
OR
B. Tell us a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

Tips

  • Some of the best statements are written as personal stories. We welcome your imaginative interpretation.
  • You may define experience broadly. For example, in option B, experience could be a meeting with an influential person, a news story that spurred you to action, a family event, or something that might be insignificant to someone else that had particular meaning for you. If you don’t think that any one experience shaped your character, don’t worry. Simply choose an experience that tells us something about you.

B. Short Response (Required)

Directions

Choose one of the following two topics and write a short essay. Please do not exceed 500 words.
  1. The University of Washington seeks to create a community of students richly diverse in cultural backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. How would you contribute to this community?
  2. Describe an experience of cultural difference or insensitivity you have had or observed. What did you learn from it?

Tip

As you reply to this question, reflect on what you have learned — about yourself and society — from an experience of cultural difference.

Coming of age: Final essay

After youth church service was done, nighttime has come. By then, it was probably 7:00 P.M. Seeing all the people go in cars and ride away with their bikes, my older brother and 2 cousins wanted to walk home instead. Here in Kalihi? A prison, housings, random shops surround us, and of course the different variety of people we don’t know about. Even though I was 13, I was scared out of my mind. I never know how Kalihi would be dangerous. I agreed to them because I thought to myself they would protect me. Letting my mom know was the right thing to do, but they told me to not worry.
I was still nervous knowing that this was my first time walking at night here in my own neighborhood.  Although, we decided to walk, they wanted to stay longer. Seeing my brother talk to people, two cousins playing ball with the hoop they had, I felt we weren’t going to walk home but instead get picked up. I told them let’s go, looking at my phone it was 9 P.M.. My phone filled with missed calls by my mom. My brother texted back, lying, and saying we were getting dropped off by friends. I just wanted to go home already.
As I was going to text my mom what happened, he said finally said all their good byes and we started walking away from church properties. During our walk in Kalihi, hardly any other people were walking at this time. My heart started to beat fast in this dark environment, all of our phones were dead. We had to finish the walk without getting picked up. I have seen couple of people laying down on the floor, people who didn’t look normal, and people doing their own typical things that I see during the day. I knew these people were unfortunate; their lives were harsh, nothing that I could compare to them.
We tried walking the safest direction, but everywhere was still the same. My cousin said to me to not walk close to him. He was also questioning to me about the clothes  that i am wearing. Thinking in mind why red is bad. We got closer to the street where I live. My brother told me lets cross through KPT. I didn’t event know that place was even dangerous or safe. But I knew not to agree. We continued to walk and I still questioned why red is so bad since I was wearing red shoes and a slipper. One of my cousin told me to walk all bad, jokingly I did. A man across the street suddenly yelled at us saying “you one blood yea, HI!" You think your bad? Come here!” I questioned myself what’s a blood. The man in light blue continued to say these things and started to walk faster towards us. The first person to run was my brother. After that we all started running. I turned around, 2 other guys were with that horrid man, staring and sticking the unnecessary finger at us.
We ran home as fast as we could. Everything on my mind was “what just happened” Realizing what these people are and what they go through, I don’t want my lifestyle to end up like that. I told my mom the story and the first thing she told me…”Get out of Kalihi and move to the mainland.” After this incident happened, i looked at life a little differently. Seeing all the people i seen, being near them, having to go through this everyday was caused by the choices they made. It was also cause by choices they should not have done. I reflected back at the huge problems that I caused. If I continue to be a person that just don't care, all these problems stack up and affect, my future. Now, I am more aware of what I do and my surroundings. I try do what is best for me, and being on guard in whenever situations are about to happen.
